The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed annually across Canada on Sept. 30, presents an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools – the effects of which still resonate in communities across Canada. Orange Shirt Day, as it is also known, is meant to be a day of reflection and understanding — for all to come together to honour residential school survivors, to remember the children who never made it home and to support the journey toward healing and reconciliation.

Several events are planned throughout Winnipeg this coming Saturday. The Oodena Celebration Circle at The Forks will be the rallying point for the Wa-Say Healing Centre’s third annual Orange Shirt Day Survivor’s Walkwhich will begin at 11 a.m., led by the Oyate Techa Riders, and which will finish at Canada Life Centre, where the Orange Shirt Day Pow Wow will run from 1 to 6 p.m.

St. John’s Park, just north of the Redwood Bridge on north Main Street, will host a Day of Reflection Sacred Fire and Gathering between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. You can also pick up free orange shirts in the park on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 28 and 29, between noon and 4 p.m. (or until supplies run out).

If you can’t get make it out to those events, APTN will broadcast Remembering The Children: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2023, a 90-minute commemorative gathering live from Parliament Hill, starting at 11:30 a.m.

The most effective measure you can take to protect yourself against crime is to stay alert to your surroundings and trust your instincts.

    • Plan your trip before leaving
    • Use a well-lit and frequent used bus top
    • Try and wait with someone or have someone meet you at your stop
    • Always look confident in where you are going
    • Be aware of who gets on and off the bus with you
    • Do not display electronics or jewelry
    • Sit close to the driver
    • Use Winnipeg Transit’s Request stop program. This allows passengers to get off the bus between regular stops, from 7 p.m. until end of service.
    • Report any abuse or harassment to the driver and or contact Police immediately
